Bangkok China Hong Kong


Day 6 Bangkok to Beijing

B: Eggs and toast, tea.

L: Went via Singapore, and had access to Qantas Club Lounge, for a couple of hours, it was a refreshing change, lots of aussies, free unlimited bar, western style snacks/food.

D: Plane food beef stew pasta with carrot and bok choy, just a meal, rating, 6.5.

Day 7 Beijing

B: Egg, Ham toast and coffee

L: Cheese pizza at Beijing Pizza Hut franchise, which also served a plethora of chinese meal options as well as standard Pizza Hut fare. As far as the cheese pizza went, it was thick crust and well cooked, and a pleasant enough change from SE Asia diet, rating 7.0






 
D: Group  dinner,  buffet banquet, plenty of fresh food and a good variety, rating 7.5. Tsing Tsao beer, 4.0%, rating 7.0

Week 28 Day 1 Beijing

B: Egg ham, toast and coffee.

L: Spicy beef noodle soup, not a bad soup, rating 7.5.

 

D: Snacks, visited famed Chinese acrobat show, managed to have Tsing Tsao beer, rating 7.0

Day 2 Jinshan

L: Fruit and snacks

D: Guesthouse banquet, rating 7.0

 

 

 
Day 3 Bus to Beijing and O/N train to X’ian

B: Rice porridge (congee) coffee and roti bread style pancakes.

L: Visited one of the oldest Peking Duck restaurants in Beijing, speciality, of course Peking Duck pancakes, which is a whole duck (which takes 2 days to prepare) being expertly sliced into 180 pieces   served with a variety of other Chinese dishes including, beef stir fry, sweet and sour pork, pork and mushroom dish, eggplant vego dish, steamed rice and of course the duck bone soup. It was collectively a huge meal with the clear highlight being the duck, rating 8.5.

 

D: Travel on overnight train after such a big lunch it was fruit and snacks.

Day 4 X’ian

B: Snacks and fruit.

L: Chilli chicken wing followed by a tomato style egg noodle dish.

D: Steamed dumplings specialty restaurant…

Day 5 X’ian

B: Fruit and snacks.

L: Visited Terracotta warriors site, which has many restaurants .local and fast food KFC, Subway, went to a local place first a ordered a roast pork roll, the roll and pork were both cold and very disappointing, rating 5.0, went next door to Chinese fast food chicken store had cumin coated chicken fillets and chips, a slight improvement, rating 6.5.

 

D: Visited a 24 hour Chinese fast food style restaurant and ordered the steak and black pepper sauce and rice, which was quite tasty

Day 6 Shaolin

B: Fruit and snacks.

B: Fruit and snacks.

L: Visited Walmart, where believe it or not, they had a fast food kitchen, so I had stir fried noodle with vegetables and a good dose of chill and cumin, very tasty, rating 7.5.

D: Ordered a large serve of the above so I had stir fried noodle with vegetables and a good dose of chill and cumin, very tasty, rating 7.5.

Week  29 Day 1 Yangshou

L: Xao Hot and Spicy chicken with rice, rating 7.5

D: Bar b q pork with honey and stir fried vegetables and rice, a reasonable dish, rating 7.0.

 

Day 3 Longji

B: Green tea fruit and snacks

 
L: Countryside hotel café banquet.

 
D: Not feeling 100%, so I had a western meal, chicken burger with chips, disappointingly, it was a prefab frozen crumbed chicken fillet, served with tomato and cucumber as salad, rating 5.0

Day 4 Longji

B: Banana pancake with coffee.

L: Bamboo rice with chicken and vegetable, a very plain flavourless meal, rating 5.0.

 
D: Pork and vegetable noodle soup, spiced up with a good dose of chilli paste, rating 7.0.

Day 5 Bus to Guillin and O/N Train to Shenzen

B: Snacks and fruit.

L: Pork and vegetable noodle soup spiced up with a good dose of chilli paste, rating 7.0

D: Chicken fillet burger, with chips and a drink at Do and Me, fast food Chinese style, rating 5.5

Day 6 Hong Kong

B: Fruit

L: Snacks on train

D: Baked pork chop in a tomato gravy, on a bed of rice with vegetables, a simple dish, rating 7.0

Day 7 Hong Kong

L: Chicken and cheese baguette.

D: Seafood banquet, chicken and corn soup, salt and pepper squid, chilli tempura prawns, whole steamed fish, bok choy, fried rice, ginger scallops with glass noodles, after visiting the fresh seafood stalls in the village enroute to the restaurant, the meal more than matched expectations, rating 8.5. Also sampled an Ice Blue beer, which was a bitter ale, rating 6.5, switched to Vodka and lemonade as drink of choice for balance of harbour cruise,

Week 30 Day 1 Hong Kong

B: Cappuccino

L: Red Curry with Smoked Duck Breast and vegetables, eggplants, potato and carrots with rice and fresh chilli, a very tasty dish, rating 8.0, served with a Singha beer rating 7.5. Preceded by a couple of pints of Carlsberg lager draughts, went down a treat, rating 8.0. 

D: Visited a Vietnamese restaurant, and had an old favourite Pho (Beef) Noodle soup, tasty broth, bok choy, coriander, another tasty simple dish rating 7.5.

Day 2 Hong Kong

B:

L: Visited Macau, to try our luck at the Casino, went to the ???? restaurant for lunch, which was Prawn Wonton Egg Noodle Soup, real disappointment, rating 3.5.

D: McDonalds Chicken Fillet Burger chips, Coke shame…

 

 

 

 

Day 3 Hong Kong

B: Bacon & Egg Muffin, Cappuccino. Free Wi Fi

L: Andy and Rayna took us to a really nice restaurant , see photos, a great meal, rating 8.0.

 

D: There was little doubt  what my last meal on the adventure would  be especially in an Asian city, so it was roast duck with rice, chilli sauce ,greens, and this was a fairly good variety, rating 7.5.,:

Day 4 Hong Kong O/N Flight to Cairns/Brisbane

L; Went to street restaurant and had groper fillet, thai fishcakes, laksa noodle soup with bok choy a very nice last lunch in Hong Kong, rating 7.5.

D: On Cathay Pacific, Beef with rice carrots peas, average plane food, rating 5.0

Day 5 Flight Brisbane to Cairns

B: Yoghurt and fruit.

Glasgow Hong Kong Laos Thailand Koh Samui, Bangkok

Glasgow to Paris. Paris to Hong Kong


B: Coffee

L: Cheese and sun dried tomatoes toasted Panini and a chocolate croissant.

D: Lufthansa dinner offering was, a small salad, chicken in lemon sauce served with stir fried vegetables and rice, and a marble cake with pear and pistachio topping, not too bad for airline fare, rating 7.0.

Day 3 Hong Kong

B: Still on Lufthansa, scrambled eggs, with potato wedges and grilled chicken and stir fried vegetables, followed by fruit salad

D: Delicious smoked duck breast noodle soup, with chinese cabbage, bean sprouts, spiced up with chilli sauce and oil, a good introduction back to real Asian cooking, rating 8.0


Day 4 Hong Kong

B: Coffee and croissant.


L: Pork (sausage, pattie and rib) and rice, the most ordinary chinese meal in years, rating 4.5, shame on Hong Kong restaurant for serving/destroying its reputation.

Lamb Shanks

D: Went out for dinner with Michael (Reddy) and Pan Grant to celebrate birthday, went to Fat Angelo’s Italian restaurant, decided to try the Lamb Shanks with mashed potato and vegetables, it was a huge ass serve, but disappointingly, the lamb didn’t fall off the bone (not cooked long enough) and the potato was still lumpy( not mashed enough and not enough butter to make it creamy), the red wine sauce/gravy, did save it somewhat, but with simple care could have been so much better, rating 7.0. I decided to try a Carlsberg stubby which wasn’t as good as the lager on tap in West Kilbride, rating 7.0, then sampled a couple of San Miguel (Phillipines) draughts, which were much better and went down a treat, rating 7.5.

Day 5 Hong Kong

B: Coffee and croissant.

L: Bar B –Que Pork rice noodle soup, with chinese cabbage, bean sprouts, spiced up with chilli sauce and oil, much better chinese meal, rating 8.0

D: We visited night markets and ate at a street vendor, where we sampled sweet and sour pork and salt and pepper calamari with steamed rice, a nice simple meal, rating 7.5. I decided to try a chinese bakery custard tart, which was still warm and tasted great, rating 8.0.

Day 6 Hong Kong to Hanoi

B: Coffee and a Ham and egg muffin.

L: Fish burger and chips at HK Airport, then provided with beef stroganoff and rice on flight to Hanoi.

D: Went to out gadventures group dinner at a vegetarian restaurant, where I had the lentil curry, nan bread and steamed rice, quite flavoursome for a vego meal, rating 7.5. For drinks had a Tiger beer, still pretty ordinary, rating 6.5, followed by a couple of old favourites Heinekens, much better, rating 8.0.

Day 7 Hanoi to Vientiane

B: Hotel Hong Ngoc buffet.

L: Ate at a street stall, I sampled the Pho Ba noodle soup, a pleasant reintroduction to Vietnamese street food, rating 7.5.

D: Had ½ grilled chicken with a really hot and spicy green papaya salad and sticky rice, a great meal, welcome change to food with real flavour, rating 8.0. Due to the heat of the meal needed to try a few beers, namely, Laos lager 5%, which is a very easy to drink lager, rating 8.0.

Week 25 Day 1 Vientiane to Vang Veng

L: Chicken cheese and salad baguette.


Meat (Lung) and green vegetables

D: Went to Peeping Sum restaurant, and decided to try the home cooked Laotian meal, provided by local lady, sadly it was somewhat disappointing, consisting of beef and vegetable stir fry, with a heavy dose of 5 spice, chicken chilli and bamboo shoots and sticky rice. Regrettably the meals arrived cold and were not warmed- up, the flavour was ordinary, rating 6.0. Also sampled 3 more Laos lager which were much more pleasant, rating 8.0, desert was a fresh street vendor made pancake with banana and nuttella, very tasty, rating 8.0

Day 2 Vang Veng

B: OJ, Tea with baguette and jam.

L: Snacks and fruit.

D: Opted for a yellow chicken curry with potato, carrots, eggplant, beans and steamed rice, added some extra chilli to give flavour a boost, a reasonable meal, rating 7.0, followed by 3 Laos lagers, rating 8.0. Desert was a fresh street vendor made pancake with banana and nuttella, very tasty, rating 8.0

Day 3 Luang Prabang

B: Tea and Omlete with toast.

L: Chicken fried rice, rating 7.0.

D: : A thai buffet, chicken with coriander, chilli and lemon grass, coconut chicken and vegetable curry, baked potatoes, steamed rice, and a generous mix of fresh chilli, and chilli oil entrée was a banana spring roll, a pleasant combination of foods, rating 8.0.

  
Day 4 Luang Prabang

B: OJ, Coffee and scrambled eggs with baguette.

L: Fruit, dragon fruit, rambutans, longans and bananas.

D: Water buffalo meat with vegetable curry with steamed rice, included potatoes, carrots, Asian greens , a reasonable flavour, not unlike beef, rating 7.5. Beer Laos lager beers, again a perfect buddy for spice and heat of curry, rating 8.0.

Day 5 Pak Beng

B: Tea with and omlete.

L: Chicken fried rice, rating 7.5.

D: Yellow chicken and vegetable curry and steamed rice, a tasty plain dish, less spicy, rating 7.5.

Day 6 Chiang Khong

B: Coffee, OJ, Scrambled Eggs and baguette.

L: Fresh fruit, including bananas, longans, rambutans, dragonfruit, nashi pears.
Laos Condiemnts


D: Grilled pork fillet with salad, steamed rice and salad, with chilli, a plain dish, rating 7.0, accompanied by 2 Singha beers, which went down a treat, rating 7.5.

Day 7 Chang Mai

B: Coffee with banana baguette and a grilled lemongrass and chilli pork sausage, a very tasty snag, rating8.0.

L: Ham and cheese croissant and a banana baguette.

D: Pad Thai Pork with chilli. a more spicy and enjoyable meal, rating 8.0, served with a couple of Singha beers, rating 7.5.
Week 26 Day 1 O/N Train Chang Mai to Bangkok

B: Milo

L: Snacks and fruit

D: Red Curry with smoked duck fillet and vegetables, fruit, rating 7.5, accompanied by 1 Chang beer 6.4%, rating 6.5, a bitter ale and 1 Singha lager, more palatable pleasant beer for my taste, rating 7.5.

Day 2 Bangkok

B: Bacon and scrambled eggs, toast, OJ and coffee.

L: Street food, a combination noodle soup, pork, chicken, seafood, squid and greens, quite tasty, rating 7.5.

D: Thai fish patties 7.5 as a starter, followed by a red pork curry which was nice and spicy, helped by a good dose of chilli, served with steamed rice, rating 8.0 , followed by a Singha beer, rating 7.5.

Day 3 Bangkok

B: BCH Breakfast

L: Chicken and Rice rating 7.0

D: Went to a restaurant, and had Minced Pork Spring Rolls, glass noodle salad, tasty, rating 7.5, Deep Fried Chicken Wings with chilli dipping sauce, rating 7.5.

Day 4 Bangkok to Koh Samui

B: BCH Hotel Breakfast

L: Thai  fish cakes with chilli dipping sauce, rating 7.0, followed by a tasty yellow chicken curry with vegetables, a fair meal, rating 7.5.

D: Duck and jade noodles at Bbangkok airport, a plain ordinary meal , rating 6.0  

Day 5 Koh Samui

B: Bayview buffet breakfast. 

L: Barracuda in black pepper sauce and rice, only a fair meal rating 6.5. followed by a cold Singha Lager, very refreshing, rating  7.5.

D: Dinner at Bayview restaurant, Pad Thai Pork in an Omlete, with salad, rating 7.5.

Day 6 Koh Samui
B: Bayview buffet breakfast.

L: Grilled Snapper at street vendor, very tasty, rating 8.0.

D: Had a rental motorcycle, so went back to srteet vendor/markets so sampled, fresh Grilled Snapper, sticky rice, marinated Pork spareribs, cucumber tomato, young coconut juice, a great street market meal, rating 8.0. 

Day 7 Koh Samui

L: Beef hamburger with chips7.0, 2 Singha beers, rating 7.5

Amsterdam and Glasgow


Day 7 Brussels to Amsterdam

B: At Hotel Sabina
L: Sushi rolls, ham and cheese roll and fruit
D: Margarita Pizza with olives, just a pizza, rating 7.0. Had a break from beers, needed it.

Week 23

Day 1 Amsterdam

B: Coffee and croissant.
L: Weather starting to cool down, did a walking tour of Amsterdam, so had a hearty Pea and Ham soup (Dutch style) served with rye and crusty bread.

D: Bought ½ bar b que chicken and salads from supermarket, a nice change, rating 7.0, followed by a half decent bottle of Rose.

Day 2 Amsterdam

B: Coffee and fruit bun.
L:  Train trip to The Hague so had Ham and cheese roll and a sausage roll and a fruit bun from the station bakery. Also got back in time to take in the Heineken brewery tour, well worth the 15 euro, and the sampler and 2 really cold large Heinekens went down a treat, still a top beer, rating 8.5.

D: Went to the Argentinian restaurant downstairs from the Royal Hotel where we were staying, and had the Argentinian Rump steak with chips and salad bar, topped off with the owner’s special chilli sauce which was very hot and a great accompaniment. The steak was so tender and tasty, a butter knife would have cut it, the best steak I have had in many a year, a definite converter to Argentinian meats, rating 9.0. Washed down with 2 icy cold Heinekens of course, rating 8.5 again.

Day 3 Amsterdam

B: At Hotel Royal, omelette with bacon, OJ and coffee.
L: Ham and salad roll, followed by a couple of cold Heinekens, rating 8.5.
D: Roast Duck and noodle soup, spiced up with chilli sauce, a real winner, rating 8.5. Leaving Holland tomorrow so had to try a warm waffle with strawberries and cream and dusting of icing sugar, a great desert, rating 8.5.

Day 4 Amsterdam to Glasgow

B: Ham and cheese toasted sandwich.
L: Ham, salad and egg roll, followed by a chocolate muffin.
D:  We were visiting West Kilbride, about 40 minutes drive west of Glasgow, near the mouth of the River Clyde, it was rainy, windy and cold, our hostess, Lorraine had graciously cooked a hearty Irish Stew, complete with vegetables and served with fresh baked Irish soda bread, a great change to have a home cooked meal, rating 8.0.  I also sampled a couple of Budweiser beers which went down well with the stew, rating 7.5.

Day 5 Glasgow

B: OJ, Tea and Toast.
L: Went to Falkirk wheel, where we had lunch of Lentil soup with crusty bread, followed by fresh baked banana and chocolate chip scones and a good coffee, very enjoyable lunch, rating 8.0.

D: Home- made spaghetti bolognaise and salad, rating 7.5 washed down with a couple more Budweiser beers, rating 7.5.

Day 6 Glasgow

B: OJ, Tea and toast.
L: Visited lovely Loch Lomond, where I had lunch of Lentil soup with brown bread, followed by fresh baked scones with jam and cream and a good coffee, very enjoyable lunch, rating 8.0. Lentil soup 2 days in a row had the obvious effect........., I could have contributed to Scottish energy needs.

D: Visited Marks and Spencer, department store, who had a special of a 3 course meal and a bottle of wine for 10 quid, I passed on the wine and decided to try a couple of Czech Lager beers. Dinner was baked Chicken, ham and cheese filo pastries, with vegetables, a lovely meal, and a cheese selection, rating 8.0, The beers, 2 more buds, rating 7.5, and the Czech lager which is custom made for M&S, rating 8.0.

Day 7 Glasgow

B: OJ, Tea and Toast.
L: Went in to Glasgow for the day, and for a change decided to try a Mexican chain restaurant, where I had chilli con carne, which was nice spicy and hot, followed by a bean and chipotle soup, which again was very spicy and tasty, a good change, rating 7.5.
D: Lorraine had additional guests visiting, Mary (a long-time friend from Ireland) and her husband, Jean Pierre from France, so we had a great dinner, starting with smoked salmon and salad, home- made lasagne, salad and cheese selection, topped off with fresh strawberry tartlets, a real home cooked treat and charming company to boot, rating 8.0. The beers, I tried were a couple more Czech lagers, rating 8.0, and decided to try one of the home beers, a Tennents’ lager, which was a good drop, rating 8.0.

Week 24

Day 1 Glasgow

B: OJ, Tea and Toast.
L: Went to the local pub and tried the 10 quid 2 course menu, firstly a delicious cream of vegetable soup, followed by crumbed haddock, hand cut chips and peas, good solid Scottish fare, rating 7.5. I felt obliged to try the lager on tap which was Carlsberg, went down a treat, rating 8.0.

D: Chicken korma, rice and naan bread, cheese selection and salad, this was followed by home-made apple pie and cream, another great meal, rating 8.0. The beers, I tried were a couple more Czech lagers, rating 8.0, and decided to try one of the home beers, a Tennents’ lager, which was a good drop, rating 8.0.

L: Went to the English Gardens, Chinese Pagoda beer garden restaurant, sampled the roast pork, with crackling with potato dumplings and a caraway seed gravy, a very generous and tasty meal, rating 8.0, also sampled my first Hoffbrau lager (5.2%) alcohol, went a treat with the meal, rating 8.0.
D: After such a big lunch pass.

Day 7 Munich

B: Buffet at Hotel Ambiente 
L: Chilli wurst roll, rating 7.5 and a Lagerbier Hell (5%), rating 8.0. 

Went to Hoffbrau and Augustiner beer halls, the litre steins of Hoffbrau matched the earlier sample, rating 8.0, whilst the Augustiner (5.2%)was even better lager beer for my palate, rating 8.5.

Day 1 Munich

L: Went to Andecks Monastery beer garden, and tried the enormous roast pork knuckle with potato salad, rating 8.5, and the local lager Andecks lager, good beer, rating 7.5

Day 3 Strasbourg to Nancy

B: Coffee and croissant
L: Ham and Cheese Baguette, sampled a couple of Kronenbourg beers, nice and cold, rating 8.0.
D: Found a small restaurant near Stanislas Square, and they had 3 course meals for 15euro. I sampled Smoked Ham as entrée, Chicken fillet with a cream sauce, served with rice and a ratatouille of zucchini, squash and tomatoes, followed by a crème caramel, very satisfactory meal, well worth a rating of 8.0.

Day 4 Nancy to Brussels

B: Coffee and croissant
L: Ham and Cheese croissant, followed by a vanilla slice and a coffee éclair. This was a real French affair, and tasty to boot, rating 8.0.
D: Snacks on train.

Day 5 Brussels

B: At Hotel Sabina
L: In the masses of restaurants at Grande Pace Grote Market, found a Chinese restaurant offering a buffet for 10 euro, so sampled, hot and spicy soup, curry chicken beef and vegetables, spring rolls, calamari rings, fried rice sweet and sour chicken and deep fried prawns and fruit salad for desert, had to rate an 8.0.   
 
D: Went to La Biere Circus, where the barman was the resident clown, and tried a beer drinkers special, speck, potato, leek, and carrot on toast, with a small salad, a very filling meal, rating 7.5, followed by a few samples from an extensive beer menu. Namely a Vivien Imperial Pale Ale, 8.0%, very malty and dark colour, rating 7.5, next was a Stribbie Pils, a clear ale, very refreshing, rating 8.0, and finally a Keyte Dobbel Trippel 9.2%, a dark almost black beer, triple blended, very fruity and spicy, a cross between a Guinness and a double sars, dangerously easy to drink. I can now work out how soccer hooliganism started, a 6 pack of this rocket fuel, and even a 50kg weakling, would think he could fight and beat Mike Tyson, a top beer , rating 8.5.

Day 6 Brussels

B: At Hotel Sabina
L: Went to Antwerp for the day on the train and found a Belgium specialty, a hot potato chipper, made fresh from real spuds, matched up with a curry bratwurst and the hot samurai sauce (which burnt the next day), a fast food winner, rating 8.0, had to have a beer to cool the palate, a Juliper 5%, not a bad lager, rating 7.5.

D: Dined at another beer bar near accommodation, an ordinary offering of spaghetti bolognaise,  Leffe wheat beer 5%, not my favourite, rating 6.0, Juliper Lager , again a good drop rating 8.0, Hoegarrden wheat beer, again not my favourite, rating 6.0 .
